How to Convert Temperature Units

Temperature conversion means changing a temperature value from one scale to another—like Celsius (°C), Fahrenheit (°F), or Kelvin (K). Unlike length or weight, temperature units don’t just scale up or down by simple multiplication. They also have different zero points.

For example: Water freezes at 0°C, 32°F, and 273.15 K, and boils at 100°C, 212°F, and 373.15 K

Because each scale has its own starting point and spacing, temperature conversions require formulas using both multiplication and addition/subtraction. A converter removes the need to remember those formulas and helps ensure accuracy for science, cooking, weather, and everyday use.

The Most Common Temperature Scales

Three major temperature scales are used worldwide:

Celsius (°C). The standard in most countries and in scientific contexts. Based on the freezing and boiling points of water.

Fahrenheit (°F). Primarily used in the United States for weather, HVAC, and cooking. It has smaller degrees for finer resolution near human comfort levels.

Kelvin (K). The scientific temperature scale, starting from absolute zero—the coldest temperature theoretically possible. Kelvin does not use degree symbols.

These scales can express the same physical temperature differently. This tool instantly converts between them so you can use whichever scale best fits your situation.
